Hi Joe,
Many of the new car manufacturers have service bulletins available discussing
that very subject. You may have to do some hounding at your local dealer to
come up with one for your specific vehicle. Failing that, write or email
customer service at the manufacturer.
What you are dealing with here is mainly antenna cable routing away from
onboard computers, air bag actuators, etc. In some cases, it is possible to run
considerable power (<100W) if care is taken to do it correctly.
I have seen several of these bulletins and they are very specific and
informative. That caveat in the owners manual relating to power is not always true,
but is a CYA for the manufacturer lest you toss in a less than professional
installation and either blow something up of cause brake or engine failure while
keyed up.
I had experience with that once on my Gold Wing motorcycle with a 50 watt 2
meter rig. Turns out, in this case, that there was a broken ground wire in a
connector to the engine control computer. Everything was fine at 5 watts, but
it would stop dead and all the warning lights came on when attempting full
power. Rapairing the ground completely cured the problem.
73 and happy holidays,
