OK, OK...one more story and I promise to stop. And this is a true story!
Ten years ago my wife and I were in the car and I decided to stop at the main downtown branch of the post office (which kept its doors open 24 hours a day for its main lobby). It was a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon and around mid-afternoon. I decided to run inside and drop a letter in the slot that I wanted to get underway.
While I was inside the cavernous post office lobby I heard amid the myriad of cars honking and engine noise outside something that seemed strange. I realized it was a car's horn honking out "S O S" in Morse code. I moved to a window to see my terrified wife sitting inside the car with a guy outside trying to get in. My lovely and quick thinking wife, who is not a ham and knows NO Morse code other than "S O S", had the presence of mind to slam the locks down on the doors when the guy approached and began trying to attract my attention with "S O S" - even though other car horns and noise surrounded her.
I bolted through the door and lost the guy down an alley. In retrospect I have no idea what would have happened had I caught him. Thanks goodness he was faster than me! Ironically a police station was only a block away so I returned to the car and reported the incident. A guy was apprehended about a week later who matched our description and who had similarly preyed on women waiting in cars in the area after he raped and beat several women.
Duane, I apologize for this off topic story. What could this possibly have to do with Hallicrafters? Uh, I think I had an SR-150 in the car at the time.
Seriously, just the like guy tapping out Morse on the pipe at the World Trade Center it is a darned handy thing to know when you have no technology to interface with and that will happen, as with my wife, only when you need it most.
