I received a few more msg's about the Crystal
calibrator in the SX-111 and it seems that this
calibrator or crystal in a tube, does not need
to be in a vacuum environment.

Numerous "Mr. Fixits", said they cut or smashed
the glass envelope to gain access to the crystal
and just glued the glass back.  One individual,
shattered the glass envelope and replaced it with
a pill bottle container!  Works just fine.

So, it would seem from these comments, that the
unit will function witout a vacuum and can take
a licking and keep on ticking.
