[Hallicrafters] SX-111 Crystal in a Tube

I would like to thank all for the emails about the SX-111
crytal in a tube.  That is what I suspected but as I said,
never seen by these eyes.

Some of you described glueing the glass to the tube for
various reasons, and I realized, that the one in my SX-111
is glued to the bakelite tube base.

Others stated the element is in a vacuum.  One respondent
said he knew someone who cut the glass, repaired the
internals and glued the glass back on.  I'm sure the vacuum
was no longer there.

How sure are we that the element is in a vacuum?  Does it
require a vacuum to operate?  I don't believe standard or
todays crystal packages are vacuum sealed.
