Mike,
Congrats on finding your S-53!
Yes, the 6L6 might damage the set. The problem is that the 6L6 runs
half an ampere more filament current and about 40 milliamperes more
plate current than the 6K6. If it runs for an extended period the power
transformer or the output transformer may overheat and fail. Better
substitutions to consider would be a 6F6 or possibly a 6V6, but a 6K6
should not be that hard to find. I'll bet if you tell us where you are
somebody nearby will offer you one.
