You want the safest way?  Put the rig in the backrest of your car and
deliver it by hand!

I have used UPS almost exclusively, because they are the only service I
have found that will PICK UP a surface package.  FEDEX does not offer
this service and being handicapped I cannot easily get to their offices.

I use double boxing and allow plenty of crush space between the boxes. 
I here been lucky. I have never had a radio destroyed or broken, but
there is always a first time waiting in the wings!
