Generators like the Hewlett-Packard 204 are
solid-state, cover the range, are both stable and have
a pretty accurate dial (as well as being fairly small
in size).  However, you really don't have to have a 50
KHz generator.  You can inject at the 1st i.f. and do
the alignment.  You just have to make sure that the
frequency is correct at the higher i.f.

If you use a 50 KHz generator, make sure and use a
counter as well to make sure that you are getting the
correct frequency.
