I used to own an S-72. I just wound a piece of wire around the end
of the "whip" for an external connection! On CW or SSB, you have to be
careful where the RF gain is set. Best thing is to run the AF gain (volume)
full on and control the overall gain with the RF gain control (think
Hallicrafters called it "Sensitivity" control!)

Subject: [Hallicrafters] New arrival S72
| I just received a S72 portable RX circa 1950. Its in fair shape but
| receives BC well and with the whip built in I heard Missouri on 40SSB and
| North Carolina on 40CW.
|
| This receiver was used by the late W2BBK on trips to VP2 islands in the
| early 50's along with the Elmac and Gonset transmitters. There was a
| picture in the Dx column of QST of W2BBK and his gear in about 1953 or so.
| It does have a BFO and CW and SSB tune in well altho it distorts a little on
| SSB. I think the BFO may be weak as it has a level control but nearly cuts
| the receiver off when turned up.
|
| I am getting a schematic and wonder if anyone has some ideas on how to
| replace the broken carrying strap. The chassis looks clean but I have not
| looked under to see if the caps need replacing. The simulated wood case
| needs cleaning so if you have had luck with such a case (Zenith,
| Hallicrafters etc) let me know.
|
| One thing that surprised me is that there is no direct connection for an
| outside antenna. The whip and the BC loop are soldered in.
