For what its worth as a source of foam rubber....I shipped a 45-lb DuMont
scope by wrapping it in foam rubber carpet pads (recycled, not new!) and
securely taping the bundle. The back & front panels were covered with thick
pillows made of folded up pad. Doublewalled cardboard box formed the
outside. Arrived in good shape, but then the scope was built like a tank to
begin with <s>.
