[Hallicrafters] Hallicrafters SX-28A parts needed

Unfortunately, virtually everything that goes through
UPS's Mesquite, Texas (Dallas area) facility comes out
with problems. This has included two units that were
packed in wooden crates with solid styrofoam. The
crates were made from 3/4 inch thick plywood,
reinforced with 1 x 4 boards on the edges, etc.

They have destroyed triple boxed items that were
properly packed. This has been happening only for
about the last 9 months. Before that, I had been
shipping by UPS since 1970. I used to own the
Motorola reconditioned equipment center for the
south-central US (1970 - 1979 when Motorola went out
of that end of the business). We shipped many radios
by UPS, from handhelds to Motracs. The only problem
that we ever had was when someone ran a fork lift
through one box. Even then, UPS tried to say that it
wasn't their fault!

But, starting last year, the service has gotten so bad
that I refuse to use them. Just last week, I received
a box of parts from Mouser (they ship everything by
UPS), located on the south side of Fort Worth (about
50 miles away). When it got here the next day, all
six sides of the box had been completely crumpled.
Fortunately, Mouser had packed the parts so that they
were not hurt. However, considering the damage to the
box, it was a wonder that there was no damage.

Lately I have received numerous boxes from Mouser that
were damaged, but not as bad as the latest one. Also,
on several boxes that had been damaged, the clear tape
had been cut, part of the shipment removed, and then
it was retaped with UPS tape (different from what
Mouser uses). All of these boxes weighed less than 10
pounds, most in the 1 to 2 pound ranges.

Three boat anchor units were received without a mark
on the box. However, they had been so severely shaken
in transit that numerous shorts had happened by the
components actually moving. The only common point on
all of these is the Mesquite facility.

Also, since Christmas of 2000, it has been the policy
of UPS to open every package presented at their
shipping counter to make sure that everything is
properly packed. When they do this, they accept all
liability for the packing. Any employee who does not
open and examine a package is subject to immediate
dismissal. Now, do they open every package? Of
course not! But, will any employee admit that they
didn't open the package? You got that right! Thus,
even though UPS tries to say that any damage was
caused by improper packing, they legally accepted it
and therefore have no legal leg to stand on. When you
point this out to them they get very cooperative!
This when a few moments before they have been very
uncooperative.

I have been in UPS facilities when they were packing
something for a customer. Frankly, I think that my 3
year old granddaughter could do a better job! They
primarily use crushed paper sheets. Only on a very
few items do they even suggest using the foam
packages.

Anyway, I started using FedEx Ground late last Fall
and have not regretted it. That is not to say that
they won't damage anything at some time. However, I
have received several poorly packed boat anchors that
came through without a scratch. In fact, there wasn't
even a mark on the box! In addition, FedEx Ground is
a little bit cheaper than UPS.

You have to expect UPS to behave that way and get it
packed accordingly.
