[Hallicrafters] restoring

My response to all of you is to apply a black spray paint to the Orange Drop
caps before installation, of course! Who said that life cannot be made
simple. Now don't you feel better that you have your radio recapped with
"Black Beauties?"

Next time, go to the experts!

With tongue in cheek, I remain,

I originally thought "Black Beauties of Death" was a totally made up
disparaging phrase of recent vintage as these and similar molded plastic
paper caps have failed in large numbers. But no -- Black Beauty was
Sprague's tradename for their version of the product. There are also
Gray Ladies of Doom, and bright red Cornell-Dublier's with yellow
printing.

Of course, we have to keep in mind that, even in the good ol' days,
manufacturers did not design and build things to last indefinitely,
particularly in electronics where innovations and changes would render
the products obsolete quickly. They weren't too concerned about the caps
or any other component lasting several decades, let alone a half century.
The fact that we can get any of this stuff to work is a small miracle,
or maybe a big accident. Even so, your 1940 SX-28 still running on most
of it's waxy caps and 30 year old tubes is eminently servicable if it
goes on the fritz, whereas that 25 inch TV you bought 4 years ago goes
straight to the dump if it quits.

BTW -- An alternative to the orange drops, some swear by the yellow poly
axials. If you really want to, you could stuff old wax cap bodies with
these and reseal with beeswax -- and some do.
