I agree. I have done a fair number of electrical restorations of late
(usually don't get into cosmetics too much). I would say that at LEAST 50
percent of the radios that were playing "somewhat" when they came in for a
needed re-cap usually exhibited other problems that only showed up after
the re-cap and alignment. All resistors need testing for tolerance and a
GOOD burn-in is necessary to bring out the more obscure problems that often
show up, bad solder joints (often inside an IF can or RF coil), tubes
breaking down etc. (been 'doing' radios for the better part of 50yrs, I'm
still a "youngster" at it) IF you do the job RIGHT there really isn't any
money to be made at it simply because it is so labor intensive that you
almost need to charge "collector prices". That is why so many of do it as a
hobby, but refrain from going into "business". (There are a couple people
who do make a good living restoring R-390A's etc, BUT they do get paid the
big bux for it)
