Could that be the origin of the "Bristol Stomp"?  Remember that one? 
Naw, that's what I do when I misplace my Nth set of bristol wrenches.

Of course, you could take the knobs down to the hardware store (e.g. Ace
is the place) and retrofit with allen/hex screws, but ...  you'll be
barred from Halli-heaven.
