Yes. I first got started in radio around '54 (I was about 11). I never saw
any of those "fancy" store bought rigs till later in life. I started out by
burning my fingers on the 50L6's of "All American 5s" and old consoles that
were thrown my way. My first SW receiver was an old Zenith consol that I
somehow got working and was amazed when I heard such exotic places as Quito
Ecuador, BBC London, RADIO MOSCOW (which my parents hated my listening to
;-) etc! But the first Halli that I saw "in the flesh" was an S-38 that a
friend took me to see at his Uncle's (or some relatives) farm. Not sure
which S-38 Model, all I remember is it was black and had the half moon
dials, that is nearly half a century ago. We ooohed and aaaawed at that
marvel of technology. We'd seen fancier receivers in the catalogs but they
were what dreams were made of.

The FIRST Hallicrafters that I owned was a brand spanking new S-120 that I
bought in the BX while stationed in England, circa 1963. I was at RAF
Croughton and spotted that puppy on the shelf, it sat there for a couple
months while I saved up enough to buy it. Lost many an hour of sleep
listening to that "wonderful" receiver till the wee hours. (Not much has
changed there, I still stay up to the wee hours chasing Longwave beacons).
