Don't feel bad. My budget is well aware of the cost of R-390's and there
aren't any in my shack either! Though I have had a couple in years past
that I fully restored then turned around and sold 8^( My "stable" of stable
receivers right now consists of a Kenwood R-5000 with a full load of filters
and a Radio Shack DX-398 (Sangean ATS-909). The "not so stable" member of
the herd consists of a nice Hallicrafters 5R10A, fully electrically
renovated (NOT with original caps) and in the near future an SX-71 that I'm
looking forward to receiving and renovating. The SX-71 will be the first
Hallicrafters rig I've had that that wasn't a little 5 tube AC/DC set (I.E.
5R10A, S-120's etc) and will also be a "keeper".
Yes, even with a general coverage receiver, IF you want to listen to the VHF
ranges (6 n 2) you still need a converter as they typically only go to
30MHz, The SX-71 is an exception. It also covers 6 meters in its
(approximately) 43-54 MHz tuning range and will do Narrow FM as well as CW
and AM. I don't have the spec sheet in front of me right now.
