[Hallicrafters] radio goes dead during sweep

I really hate to get in here but-----The worst thing to use around any
radio is steel wool. Tuning caps seem to attract these little devils.
If it looks like the end plates have not been bent in or other wise bent,
a business card, no thicker, saturated with de-oxit (or your favorite)
and slide between the plates to clean them. If the card seems too thick
use a stiff piece of bond paper.
One must be very careful as the stator sections are merely staked into
the cap. frame and the insulation can get a tad loose.  then you do have
problems.
