[Hallicrafters] Chassis Cleaning ... etc.

I cleaned and went through twenty receivers here this past year so eventually
you get things down to a system I guess. I bought a big powerful Sears
shopvac just for this task. I have never used it for vacuuming so it is
always clean inside. I have the hose on the discharge side and with the blow
nozzle attached it puts out a pretty powerful jet of air. If I don't want so
much pressure due to the presence of decals and paper labels, etc., I can
remove the nozzle and blow from the end of the hose which calms it down quite
a bit. I always work on a cardtable on the deck outside due to the amount of
dust that is likely to be blown out. The usual drill for new acquisitions
here is to blow them out a little first to make disassembly a little easier.
I then disassemble as much as is practical using muffin trays to organize
hardware. If you are not planning to align right away be sure to mark tubes
for location if several are the same number. It's easy to finish the job now
with the chassis out on the cardtable again using an assortment of brushes
and the vacuum cleaner. Be sure to tape over the metal bands if your brushes
have them to prevent accidentally scratching the IF cans etc. Be really
careful around paper tags and labels. I usually tape clear plastic over them
first because they are so fragile. There's much more involved than this for
proper cleaning of course but this will get you started.
