[Hallicrafters] GFI vs Isolation Transformer

Alan,
I would have to say "no" on that one. An isolation transformer keeps the
radio chassis from becoming "hot" in reference to ground and thereby
minimizing or eliminating the possibility of a dangerous electrical shock. A
GFI outlet, on the other hand, may save your life but may also allow you to
receive a shock that you will not soon forget.
In addition, GFI outlets may not work with properly grounded boatanchors due
to the various current paths through the equipment. They may just
continually trip when you plug your equipment in. I know GFI outlets are
finicky buggers...my shop van was wired with the ground and neutral wires
tied together to keep it simple. This fact alone precludes my plugging into
a GFI circuit because it looks like a wiring or equipment fault and trips
the breaker, every time. I would rewire my van but it would be a major
undertaking.
