You should do both.

Depends what you mean by "good". The classic tube type gear is very nice
to use in my opinion: HP412C, TS-505, or even the Heath and RCA and Triplet
VTVM's. They work just fine on any Hallicrafters radio ever made. Being
able to watch the motion of a genuine moving pointer meter movement is very
handy when making alignment adjustments. Your brain does not have to
process to decide if 4.1435 volts is higher than 4.4153 In addition, no
one needs to know whether the B+ is 354.03 volts or 345.67 volts.

But, if you want cheap and handy, surf over to the Harbor Freight website
and order three digital jobbies for about $4 each, battery included. Yes,
four dollars each. One for the tool box, one to store in reserve and one
to use. Mine arrived last week and they work just fine.

Or visit Rat Shack with about $20 and you'll come away with a nice handy
thing. These new little gadgets, of course, are totally
unrepairable. Don't even think about trying to fix one that you blew up by
putting a kilovolt into the ohms setting.
