My station history gets a bit confusing, but I started out listening with an
S-40B and Heathkit Q-Multiplier. The S40 had a doorknob tube in the input
stage.

I listened to CW till my speed was "finally" up to 5 WPM and took the Novice
test. Then I used an old Navy shipboard transmitter (3 807s), but
unbeknownst to me the thing doubled in the buffer stage. I managed to work
three stations on my first contact. A guy in Wisconsin, an OO in Maryland,
and the FCC monitoring station in Laural Maryland. Received QSLs from all
three.... Next transmitter was a home built transmitter using a pair of 6L6s
and a 6AG7 oscillator. Then came the Globe Scout, but still with the S-40B.

Then, I moved up in the world...I bought a Ranger (Kit). Now that was a
Cadillac. I don't remember if I traded in the S-40B, or sold it after
purchasing an RME6900. At any rate the Ranger and RME 6900 were set up on
top of the dresser in my room.

Some where in there I made General Class and began using the Ranger on
voice. I'd carefully zero beat and then running push-to-talk join the
SSBers on 40. One day one of the guys mentioned that I had a bit of
carrier on my signal and might want to check the balanced modulator. I
fessed up that I was running the Ranger on AM. <:-)) Instead of getting
upset they got a real charge out of that.

Of course the next step was to get the HT-37.

I got married in 61. The RME 6900 and the HT-37 moved in with us.
Next step was going to the SX 117 and HT-44 combination...with a home brew
amp using a 6C21 RADAR pulse modulator The first time I said "helloooo
test" I blew about a one inch hole in the side of that 600 watt plate. What
the heck, they only cost me about $5 each, so I installed a new one.

Shortly thereafter I built up a pair of 813s using the big B&W band switch
and set them up to run grounded grid. Now there was a nice amp.

I think I sold the Hallicrafters gear and bought a Kenwood tranceiver TS820?
It had digital read out.

In 1966 I moved the family (now had a wife, daughter, and son) to
Breckenridge where we lived in a mobile home on my folks place while
building a ranch style home on the NW corner of the family farm.
