I was thinking the same thing -- even Radio Shack used to carry a
"generic" coil of sorts on the pegboard.
At least the SX-71 has a "regular" MW band -- not split up as on some
receivers. I don't know just how "universal" those coils are. Are there
any particular impedance requirements? Voltage limitations? Some of the
old hobby units might have been intended for small transistor projects.
But, if AES carries it ... sounds like it's worth a try. Maybe someone
there could tell you if that's what they're good for. Anyway, what you
describe would be reversable.
There's another thing, though as applies to the MW band on the SX-71. I
see no mention of it in the manual, but it looks to me on the schematic
that a wafer on the bandswitch bypasses the first mixer on band one. Is
it single conversion on BCB and dual on the top four bands?
Another 'nother thing, maybe two: I'm used to seeing the Halli's of this
vintage with muted silver paint on the perforated cabinet lids. This one
looks like it's chrome or nickel plated. Anybody ever seen one like
that? Also, I can still swear I see slight metalic somethings in the
black which looks more like dark charcoal gray. Someone said these were
plain black. Also (sorry) -- This one is in pretty decent shape, but
someone sometime back removed the "H" emblem. Looks like they drilled
out the hole a bit and may have had a control in there. Anybody have
repro round "H" emblems?
