This brings to mind a National receiver I encountered a few years back. 
  The owner had inadvertantly transmitted into the receiver and zapped 
the antenna coil.  He wanted me to replace it for him but close 
inspection showed that the primary had arced between the bottom turn and 
the wire from the top turn where they crossed.  A little teasing with a 
hobby knife broke the microweld and I lifted the wire enough to prevent 
them from shorting again.  After that it worked fine.
