I too have a SX-71 with that "black" BCB antenna coil. In my
case, it is black because it has apparently been hit by
lightening and burnt black. Haven't rewound it yet.......it's on my
to do list.
Take a real close look at the antenna coil and do a continuity
test of the primary. Mine is open. The trimmers would still
work OK in such a case.
