Hello All
This morning the replacement front panel arrived, was duly checked out,
gently cleaned and then sprayed with clearcoat to protect the lettering
(after checking it on the back side). Lettering looked quite good. There
were a few spots that had been touched up with a slightly different black
paint (you could probably never match the original perfectly). Anyway, it
looks 1000% better than the one that was on it, though at least the original
has the logo entirely intact. That will be transferred to the new panel
along with the glass.
The main part of the cabinet was clearcoated this morning. It gave the flat
black a very light "sheen" which I think looks better than the entirely flat
surface. At least it isn't the glaring black that a gloss enamel would
have.
THEN, while the wife was out I stuck the main part of the cabinet in the
oven and baked it. I really had no idea what temperature or time to use,
but figured that 225f would probably be "safe". Baked it about an hour.
Then stuck the front panel in the oven (same temp) just before "wifey" got
home. It's still in the oven. When she came in she said, "what stinks"? I
told her it was a "Hallicrafters Pie" <grin>. (Yes, I do have the vent
running over the stove).
While taking the knobs off the SX-71 I ran into some problems. It turns out
there are 4 different kinds of setscrews in those knobs. Some are 4 flute
screws, 2 different sizes of hex wrenches and two had standard straight
slots.
For future reference. What are good baking temperatures/times for the
typical spray paint on a metal cabinet?
