The HT-40 and the "matching" receiver, the SX-140,
were introduced around 1961 in both "kit" and "wired"
models. The HT-40 was basically an "entry level"
transmitter roughly equivalent to the Heath DX-60.
However, it did cover 80 through 6 meters as opposed
to the Heath coverage of 80 - 10 meters. Operation on
6 meters is marginal in terms of power output, but, it
will work on 6. However, the HT-40 uses a television
"sweep" tube for the final whereas the Heath uses a
6146.
The SX-140 was a "ham band only" entry level receiver
that covered 80 - 6 meters like the HT-20. The SX-140
was a little bit better than the S-107 (general
coverage receiver that covered 6 meters as well as .54
- 30 MHz), especially since it was amateur band only.
However, the performance is definitely not the best.
Original price for the HT-40 was $89.95 kit and
$109.95 wired. For the SX-140 the price was $114.95
for the kit and $139.95 for the wired model.
Use of the HT-40 / SX-140 for "fun" is just that, a
lot of "fun". However, for anything really serious,
the transmitter is probably 45 years out of date (and
that takes it before the date of manufacture!).
