***NEXT CLUB MEETING - Saturday, 31-Jul-2004
--------------------
GVARC usually meets on the LAST Saturday of each month, at the
Sunrise Cafe in Gilroy on Monterey Avenue (near the Hilton, in
front of Motel 6). From the North or South, take the Monterey St. exit
from highway 101 (south end of Gilroy) and head north. We trickle in
about 8 a.m. and eat at 8:30ish. The South County ARES net is held
each Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on W6GGF/R (147.825 -.600, no PL 100Hz).

***GVARC MEMBERSHIP
-------------------
Attention current and prospective GVARC members: There are no dues
for 2004. We did extra well volunteering at the Garlic Festival, so
voted to benefit us hams.
Usually dues for all members become payable each January. The annual
cost is only $20 per person and $10 for each family member in the same
household. Membership dues helps such things as the W6GGF/R repeater,
this newsletter, emergency readiness, etc. Membership, not required for
general use of the repeater, adds autopatch and autodial privileges.
GVARC is a non-profit organization per IRS section 501(c)(4) - we
don't make any money, do service for the community, but are not a
charity.

***HARRY SCHUMANN, K6HWR/SK
---------------------------
Harry Schumann, K6HWR, passed away peacefully last Friday afternoon,
23-Jul-2004. Harry had been hospitalized for a few weeks in a continuing
battle over heart disease.

Many of you will remember Harry as I will - a gentle and kind man
with a heart of gold and a man who was a delight to be with.

Harry was very involved in and supportive of the Gabilan Amateur
Radio Club which later became the Garlic Valley Amateur Radio Club.
Harry was instrumental in the formation of GVARC and was active in
supporting it in many ways. He was selfless in his assistance to fellow
hams and the community. He was one of several stong leaders in the club
who became chairman of Garlic Festival Communications.

Harry will be greatly missed.
  -- Frank, N7FF

I got to know Harry first when I took over the Club Newsletter. (Harry
had been doing it for several years.) He was always supportive of me in
getting used to the way of the club and encouraged, yeah, Elmered me as
I started in Amateur Radio.

Harry was always dedicated to helping the club and helping individual
members as well. But he also had his family as his top priority, they
were always tops for him.

Harry was also a member of the Western Public Service System HF net and
the Old Old Timers Club (more than 40 years on the air).
(http://www.3952khz.net/ http://www.ootc.us/)

I'm honored and pleased to have known and "played" Ham with him these
past 9 years.

...Harry, I'll miss you a lot.
   -- Tony, AD6ID

A sad loss... A good friend gone much too soon. He will be missed.

***AUSTRALIA ON 5MHZ
--------------------
The Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) plans to soon ask the
Australian Communications Authority (ACA) to consider establishing a set
of Amateur Radio channels in the 60-meter (5 MHz) band. "We have put
together a list of six proposed 5 MHz single-frequency allocations,"
said WIA Director Glenn Dunstan, VK4DU.
He said the WIA came up with the proposed allocations--which WIA has
not yet released--using the ACA's on-line frequency database and a
database of Pacific 5 MHz channels. "The 5 MHz band is used heavily
throughout the Pacific," Dunstan points out, "and this would restrict
any amateur activity to a series of spot frequencies, with operation
most probably confined to upper sideband, as is the case in the US and
the UK." He said having frequencies available in the vicinity of 5 MHz
would particularly enhance the capabilities of the Wireless Institute
Civil Emergency Network (WICEN)--Australia's equivalent of the Amateur
Radio Emergency Service (ARES). The WIA, which has been undergoing a
restructuring, now has a national Web site <http://www.wia.org.au>.

***NEW DXCC DX OPERATIONS
-------------------------
The following DX operations have been approved for DXCC credit: YA7X,
Afghanistan, March 1-April 30, 2004; HZ1AN, HZ1IZ, Saudi Arabia, all
operations; 3DXQZ, Republic of Guinea, April 20-30, 2004; YI9MC, Iraq,

2004. For more information, visit the DXCC Web page
<http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc>. A new feature, DXCC FAQ
<http://www.arrl.org/awards/dxcc/faq/>, can answer most of your
questions on DXCC program issues.

***MARLON BRANDO, KE6PZH/FO8GJ, SK
----------------------------------
One of the best-known names in cinema--Marlon Brando, KE6PZH/FO8GJ--died
in Los Angeles July 1. He was 80. Brando appears in the FCC database
under his pseudonym, "Martin Brandeaux," while his FO8GJ listing
indicates both names. He was born Marlon Brando, Jr. Brando held a US
General class ticket. He was on the air occasionally over the years as
FO8GJ from his private island in French Polynesia. In a 1994 CNN
interview with Larry King, Brando affirmed his continued interest in
Amateur Radio. In response to a caller's question, he said ham radio
provided him with the opportunity to just be himself.
