Folks:
WOW! Our expert japanese ham friends sure know how to select and BBQ the
best in Tri-tips! They got them special, they said from the Stanford
Shopping Center. (They looked REALLY aged...Completely Jet Black, at first I
had my doubts, but they cooked up, tasting incredible.
Anyone know of these kinds of marinated Tritips?
We had a grand time the N6IJ BBQ. A bunch showed up from a diversity of
sources. Thanks all for coming and, please come again, soon.
We had, Bob, KF6ZYJ, fresh from Auckland, returning from the Auckland port
call of the Golden bear, Of course, Shige-San, JH1GNU and Miki-San, JH1SBE
from Tokyo, regular business visitors to the Bay Area, Bruce, AC6DN, from
Santa Cruz, Chris, KD6IXG and Jeff, KG6KCO, from Monterey, Pat Ready, a
fellow Marina Rotarian, Dave McCall, a former Chair for the City of Marina
Recreation Commission, Kit Kohlmoos, W6ISO, and another NCCC member with him
(ouch..sorry, can't fetch the name or call from the memory cells.) Same
with a ham from Watsonville, who brought more than a pound of Abalone! WOW!
was that special!
What a rare treat! He had personally, legally, harvested them up
north...the shells (2ea) were, I would estimate, 10 inches average in
diameter!
Shige and Miki, were sure sharp on things RF! Maybe what I observed is
normal for a REAL RF engineer, or maybe not, but it was impressive to learn
about RF antenna topics from Shige. I showed him the original, personal
Antenna notebook we have at N6IJ, that was Bill Orr's, W6SAI. Bill had
hundreds of pages of notes and smith charts developed, going back to the
mid-60s, of antennas he experimented with. We looked at various matching
networks W6SAI had designed, and the Smith Charts, and also saw in an RF
design manual, that often had the lumped components values pictured, labeled
with frequency independent reactance units (inductive or capacitive ohms).
Shigi instantly called out the values of inductance or capacitance needed
for a given frequency. I understood the RF stuff, mostly, but Shigi-San and
Miki-San were RF masters, for sure.
Then, we all went down the hill to take (the now, obligatory) pictures at
the DX drive signpost, and the 599 Mailbox, which we should post, soon....
Miki, and Shige will be back, (about 3 to 4 Bay Area business visits per
year), and want to operate a contest at N6IJ, that will be in Synch with
their visits..
Anyway, stand by for a date announcement for our next Picnic at
N6IJ....maybe in conjunction with a contest...
NEXT PICNIC at N6IJ:
Our next probable picnic/BBQ will be probably around August 24, triggered by
the return of the Sailors/Sailorettes/Ham radio operators (Students from
CSUMB) from the Ocean Spanning Golden Bear Cruise. I am sure they will have
lots of sea stories to tell, and pictures to share, having travelled from
Honolulu to Fiji,to Brisbane, to Ackland, Tahiti, and the long run home to
Vallejo.
