Hello Folks,
Our Marina Rotary Medical Team just returned from Baja Mexico, after a 1
week humanitarian mission, to provide medical services to local, poor folks
at clinics in and around Ensanada, and San Quintin. Paul Vierling, our
mission organizer, brought back tales you would not believe, if you only
have seen U.S. medical facilities. The medical professional part of the
equation (doctors) are first rate, but resources at clinics are another
matter. Imagine...No TELEPHONE, No internet No RADIOS, no examining table,
etc. at an isolated clinic with only one person attending at most times. A
big car accident first materializes with midnight knocks on the clinic
door, by victims of the severe accident DRIVING THEMSELVES to the clinic.
The poor nurse or EMT at the clinic has to send someone into town to get the
Surgeon..etc etc... Radios could and WOULD be lifesavers.... With a radio
the ambulance, if available, could notify the clinic that it was on it's
way, giving advance warning to staff. One clinic could give a heads up to
another clinic 10 miles away of an emerging crisis. Pagers don't even exist
in this area, but would be very useful. Not many Cell phones either.
Perhaps old, working, big, clunker, discarded analog cellphones could be
donated to the effort.
I am finding out required specifications for the comm radios, (type
acceptance reqts, and frequencies used,) and once done, will look for usable
used, donated radios to bring down there next trip. (Memorial Day week)
Can anyone help? We could even use some of the Family Radios (FRS).
The frequencies used in Mexico are Identical to the US FRS radios.
Make it a club project to scrounge (even older model) commercial radios for
this worthwhile cause. We have people who know how to do the importation
govt paperwork to bring the radio across the border...
If you want to donate time, a week you WILL NOT FORGET in your lifetime, you
can travel with the team, expenses paid....just let us know....
If you want more info, contact me or Paul Vierling.
Tnx, 73,
