Hello Thor, nice to make your acquaintance.
Like you, my first TTY experience came from Deaf communication via
telephone. I supported a number of Model 15 TTy's dedicated to the deaf
in the mid 1970's. An acoustic modem connecting the 500 handset to the TTY.
In fact, my first wife was deaf, and I could always hear the clatter of
the 15 in the living room, and the smell of the warming oil in it as she
chatted with friends around the area. What a great reapplication of
throw away technology! Let an otherwise isolated marginalized group of
people chat over distance for the first time in their lives!
I even wired a lamp into the ringer circuit, so it would flash when a
call came in. I always wondered what voice callers thought when
answered by a flurry of tones :)
That Model 15 got occasionally repurposed as my RTTY machine, but not
often...
Would like to hear more about your TTY for the deaf experiences.
