Hello Thor, nice to make your acquaintance.
Like you, my first TTY experience came from Deaf communication via telephone. I supported a number of Model 15 TTy's dedicated to the deaf in the mid 1970's. An acoustic modem connecting the 500 handset to the TTY.
In fact, my first wife was deaf, and I could always hear the clatter of the 15 in the living room, and the smell of the warming oil in it as she chatted with friends around the area. What a great reapplication of throw away technology! Let an otherwise isolated marginalized group of people chat over distance for the first time in their lives!
I even wired a lamp into the ringer circuit, so it would flash when a call came in. I always wondered what voice callers thought when answered by a flurry of tones :)
That Model 15 got occasionally repurposed as my RTTY machine, but not often...
Would like to hear more about your TTY for the deaf experiences.

I am Thor Halvorsen, KK7VKN, and became interested in this group not just for Ham radio side but also Deaf History side. I have a few teletypes for the Deaf from the 90s that I can use for portable typewriter/poetry on the fly, but I also have a Teletype 43 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeL3mbq1mEg as an example. I would like to get it rolling, pardon the pun. The issue I have with it is the ribbon, I do not know where to get the ribbon for it.Secondly, I also have a xerox memorywriter 645S
That has printing functions like a teletype, and has connectivity. I am interested in RTTY for sure.another angle is using my Brother EP-22 electric typewriter with TRS 80 Model 102.Or I can use my HP Jornada 720 Handheld, which has been proven to work with RTTY :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k156zL2V298
I am currently studying for my General license.
Pleasure to meet you all! I have to see if the Reverend Munk is part of your list?https://typecast.munk.org/ He was the one that clued me into using the TRS 80 with the Brother EP for RTTY combo.
