When AT&T started expanding (I think it was still called
the American Bell Telephone System) Western Union started
to compete with them for telephone service. So AT&T
decided it would invade WU's turf the way WU had invaded
theirs. There was soon a settlement reached that kept
both companies focused on their own key product, but by
that time American Bell had already changed its name.
