Stoddard Solvent is a paint thinner, ok to use and works well if mixed with
kerosene 50/50. Trichroethylean is a dry cleaning solution. No idea of the
cost nw but about 30 years ago it was only about $4 per gallon. Very good
degreaser but you better use it outside. The vapors are deadly if used in a
confined area. Carbon tet used to be used but it can cause kidney failure
if you drink alcohol when using it.I doubt you can find that anywhere now.

Dextron automatic transmission fluid mixed 50/50 with Acetone makes for a
good cleaner if nothing but metal is used. No plastic allowed as it may
melt the plastic. Also a very good penetrating fluid for stuck bolts.+

Also, look up Stoddard Solvent. This stuff is widely used as a
cleaning solvent. It was originally designed as a low inflammability
solvent for dry cleaning. It is widely available under several names.
Quite effective as a degreaser.
In the past trichroroethylene was the solvent of choice for many
purposes but is now extremely difficult to obtain and expensive because
it is an environmental hazard. There is really no single substitute for
it. Some old books will suggest carbon tetrachloride, don't use it, its
very toxic. I am not sure its even available any more.
