Seems likely. In automatic switching systems it was necessary to feed out
blank tape at the end of a message so the end of the message could get
through the associated tape reader. Until the advent of FRXD with its
crawling-head reader that could read the last character punched.
There was an acronym MNILFO for Measured Non-Interfering Letters Feed
Out. Meaning it would feed out a definite amount of tape to bridge
the gap between punch and reader, non-interfering meaning that if new
traffic came into the reperf it would stop the feed out, and letters
meaning that the LTRS character was what was punched in the tape being
fed out.
