[GreenKeys] Kleinschmidt TT-4C/TG not printing

Kevin,The "Sent from my...." is just a joke - so many phones put there own tagline on, I decided to add my own.  But there are people here who do receive their email on their TTYs.Don't worry about motor speed until it starts printing.Did you try turning the motor by hand and, with the loop off, try moving the armature to see if it is moving the y-levers?Also, what is the status of the spring-bias? (Armature adjustment) With the loop off, the spring should be pulling the armature down, but with loop on, should be pulled up.Good luck & 73,DuncanK2OEQ Sent from my Kleinschmidt TT-4/TG, the US Army's first portable digital communications device, 1950-1980

    Duncan,

Thanks for the reply.  Fortunately, I do have a Kleinschmidt fork
marked as 180vps.  I don't remember when I got it or why.  I do
have a couple of TT-98's I need to restore so maybe that's why I
      got it.

I wanted to ask you, first, about how you are using your TT-4 to
send e-mail (judging from the tagline).  I thought it typed very
easily, had a good feel, when it was working.  I guess I could try
re-adjusting the motor to run a little fast and see if that does
anything for the printing issue although I know that seems
      completely illogical.

Are there any other areas besides the magnets that could be
sensitive to oil/lubrication interfering?  I did what some people
suggested and inserted pieces of paper between the armature and
magnets to try to absorb any oil.  I also tried spraying it with
contact cleaner and blowing it out with "canned air".  That seems
to have helped a little but it still isn't working correctly.  One
thing that seems to be better is that it now will run open when I
turn off the loop supply.  Before it would not do that which also
seemed illogical.  If I could get it to print ITTY, even garbage,
then maybe any oil on the magnets, or other areas, would
      eventually burn off.

Motor speed is not too crucial and would not make
        it stop printing.

Selector magnet area is quite sensitive.  Don't
worry about Range control initially, just leave it at about 60.

Oil or gunk on the selector magnet pole pieces
most likely problem, but with loop off, check that armature
        operates properly.

You should be able to turn motor by hand while
manually moving armature and get it to print (type arm may not
        come up all the way)

      Good luck

I am assuming it is a tuning fork for a Kleinschmidt.  If it was
one for a Teletype Corp machine it would not work very well.  I'm
afraid I don't remember the freq of the tuning fork for a
Kleinschmidt., but I have one or more around here somewhere, but
I'd have to dig to find them.  Maybe better minds might remember.

I think I've exhausted my limited thoughts on this so I'll refer
this to anyone who really knows what they are doing.

I've been trying to get a TT-4C/TG running.  I had it typing
      pretty well
until I adjusted the motor speed and now I can't get it to
      replicate how
it was typing.  (I know:  if it ain't broke, don't fix it.)  I
      have a
tuning fork and adjusted the motor according to manual
      instructions and
it is running pretty steady. It had been running a little fast
      when the
machine was printing. I can't get it to print ITTY.  It won't even
      print
garbage.  The magnets lock up when the loop is energized.  I tried

adjusting the range and armature settings according to the manual
      but
that hasn't helped.   It will type a few characters correctly and
      then
type garbage.  I've been trying to type RY's with one hand while
adjusting the Range setting with the other.  Not very easy.   I am

suspecting something needs to be adjusted with the armature
      because
sometimes it will completely stop typing, won't do CR/LF, etc.  If
      I
turn off the power and the loop it will still remain in a "locked"
      state
until I manually push down on the armature.  It was very dry when
      I
first got it and I've been lubing it profusely.

Thanks in advance for any help.
