I don't recall that typing was ever offered in school in the UK. 
However, my father was given a typewriter when I was about 7 or 8 at the 
same time as I too was learning piano. The two seemed to go together and 
by the time I went to college I could touch type. I'm sure it got my 
reports a higher mark for being well presented compared with my 
colleagues' hand-written ones.

The only downside is that I play the computer keyboard like I would the 
piano. A typing tutor would have a fit if they saw me.

Of course with computers there are so many more odd characters needed 
like #, @, \ which vary wildly from one keyboard design to another. So 
it's inevitable that I have to look at the keys now and again.
