In 1968 or so, I took typing at Ann Arbor High School.
My typing teacher only grudgingly allowed boys in her class; she as much as said that every man that knew how to type was likely to deny a girl a secretarial job. Count it as a somewhat warped bit of proto-feminism. I persisted in the class because I was also taking "Computer Math", a new course that used a pair of Teletype 33ASR to access an early commercial timesharing system (the machine had a 24-bit word), and it was obvious that being able to touch type instead of hunt and peck would serve me well.
