I don't know the answer, but the Teletype repair guys didn't have
oscilloscopes, at least until the Dataspeed stuff came along.  For
Dataspeed there was a scope with the form factor of a "shoebox" logic
module that fit into a hole in the base of the cabinet.  I asked one
time why the customer (Bell System) would go to the expense of putting
a scope into every set in the field.  Was told that in NYC the repair
guys were mostly on foot, so the less gear they had to carry with them
the better.
