[GreenKeys] Adjusting LXD?

Just got through cleaning and lubricating a relatively clean LXD.  I was planning on putting a scope on it and adjusting to 22 ms.  The Tek DMM 213 didn't want to play.  Oh, great I needed another project.  The batteries are crusty, so I suspect that is the problem.  Not sure if it's save to plug it in with batteries (1.2 V D size NiCad) removed. 

So the question is. How can one adjust the contacts without a scope?  I suspect I could rig something up if I had an analog meter.  Or get in the ball park by watching the printer and find the two extremes of. the adjustment and leaving it set between.

Wonder if there any chance that the Heathkit O Scope in the garage that hasn't been plugged in for 40 year will work? Guess I'll dig it out and also look for analog meters.
