You have to remember that the Internet didn't exist when most of this equipment was surplussed. (It wasn't everywhere, mostly an at work thing).  If you got drawings in the bottom of the cabinet, you were lucky. But you had to noodle out how to read Teletype flavor drawings. 

Although RTTY Journal was a good source, you'd need to have an archive since few articles covered everything. Even Irv's comprehensive article on the mouse machine appeared in something like 6 issues.

That being said I still can't justify some of the things I've seen done to machines I've seen in recent years.
