this was often done with punched paper tape, 
and eqpt like the FRXD, or an FPR reperf 
feeding an FXD td ...  late, in M-28 era, were 
the big, monster 'R/T sets' with two 
reperf/TD sets in the same cabinet, to 
accommodate both directions.
