TWX was originally (1930) 60WPM 5-bit machines.  AT&T bought Teletype 
Corp. in 1930 so they could lease out M15s for TWX service.

When the M32 came out, AT&T could offer them as 100WPM TWX service 
machines. (But they needed big [mechanical] speed converters so that 60 
WPM customers could communicate with 100WPM customers.)
