I have a complaint about all repeaters on all frequencies today that
could well be your problem. I think the need and application of tone
squelch or Channel Guard as we call it here in Syracuse General Electric
land is over done. It severely reduces the chances to use older
equipment, especially military surplus, and is likely interfering with
your AFSK RTTY. The solution I propose is convincing repeater trustees
to provide a means to shut off the tone squelch- both transmit and
receive- for a set period, pehaps an hour, when a net is going to be
held. It would turn itself back on after that time, unless commanded
once again to remain off. If coverage overlap or atmospherics require,
it could be turned back on before that time is up. The use of older
equipment and modes must not be restricted needlessly, amatuer radio
does not need any more internally generated obstacles. I fully
understand there are times when tone squelch is needed and I have
experienced them, but I have serious doubts it is needed all the time,
especially when a net or group is on the air and able to monitor the
repeater and turn it back on if need be.
