So true. I made many tapes that way.

Making tape loops can also be done with the TD, if one is careful and cautious
to 'bump' the tape forward, one character at a time. Tape loops were made before
the Tape Splicer was available.
A few LTRS characters at each end of the tape, carefully overlapped and
cautiously put into the TD, then 'bump' the TD forward, one character at a
time until the chads seat themselves into the holes comfortably. Maybe
a tiny amount of glue at the 'overlap point' to reduce the chances of the 'loose
ends' getting snagged on something.
We made lots of loop tapes when I was in the Navy and I never saw a splicer
until I'd been into Teletype as a ham, for a decade or more. We had a 14KTR
monitoring the Fleet Broadcast, along with two 28KSRs and we had few
problems keeping up with incoming traffic.
The tape loops got used in other aspects of communications operations on the
USS Hancock. (aka NWLD and "Rampage")
Later on we had a 28KTR available which made things a lot easier to keep up
with incoming traffic.
