I always enjoy pointing out that Teletype patented the daisy wheel
printer in 1939, but never produced it. (patent 2,146,380 to A. H. Reiber)
I guess the type wheel of Model 26 was more attractive at the time.
For one thing, they didn't have the plastic technology to make the daisy
wheels cheaply, and the Model 26 style with individual type pallets
made it easier to produce different type arrangements with one set of
parts. And of course it was integrated circuit electronics that made
the daisywheel a winner circa 1970. See Wikipedia article on daisy wheel
