The 'official' draw strap has metal gadgets 
at the end with a hole, as I recall -- as I read 
your post, it occurred to me that if one uses 
the shoestring or lanyard, perhaps a standard 
crimp 'wire lug' with the full hole might be a 
good way to replace those original end tabs.
