I had both kinds. The first was a shot, I think you needed
two or three, then came the oral vaccine on the sugar cube. There
was a terrible polio epidemic c.1948, not sure of the dates. I
spent my summers out of the city (Detroit). The most familiar
image was of kids in iron lungs. If ever there was an instrument
of torture to make nightmares of that was it. Everyone knew
someone who had a brush with polio, left its marks on many. My
doctor when in the country had a curved back and limp because of
it. Having it could be considered shamful! FDR hid his paralysis,
perhaps because he wanted to seem stronger and Connie Boswell, of
the Boswell Sisters, always said her paralysis was from being hit
by a steet car but it was from polio. What a world.
