Amen to that.  I'm not that old, I don't remember, but I was in the experimental group for the Salk vaccine before it was approved for general use.  Somewhere in my papers, I have a letter telling me (or rather, my parents, since I wasn't old enough to read) that the clinical trial had been a success and revealing that I'd received the vaccine (not the placebo) and was therefore immune to Polio.
