[GreenKeys] platten shaft pin

Hello,
  Still restoring the teletype 15.Any tips on getting the pin out of the platten shaft?Is it pressed in? threaded in? Is it tapered?
I thought it looked tapered so I gave it a few light taps from the end that looked smaller.Did not seem to budge so I tried to twist it with vise grips and broke it off.
I have machinist skills and tools so no big deal at this point I can drill it out.I just have to be careful I don't ruin the shaft because I cannot make my own vulcanized rubber roller..At least I haven't yet. lolI have tried back yard metal casting.lolI'm not even sure what the pin is for.I suspect for the handwheel that is missing.
If that is all it does maybe I could just file it off and use a set screw to replace it.
