[GreenKeys] WD-40

I am reminded of the 'good old days', when one could crank their engine
WITH THE IGNITION OFF for a few seconds to get oil moving around before the
stress of the engine could cause wear on critical parts which might have had
most of the oil 'drip off' and drain to the oil pan. I'm not talking about
daily use of a car, but for situations where a car might sit for a few weeks
between uses.

Another thing overlooked these days is a 'warmup period' before putting the
car in gear. This, too, will make certain that oil is distributed throughout
the engine before the stresses of motion occur.

Five to 15 seconds in moderate weather and 15 to 30 seconds in real cold weather,
and other intervals based on temperature and how long since the engine last ran.

I had a friend from work who jumped into his car, started the engine and had it
in gear in a second or two. He could never explain why he had so many things
go wrong over the life of the car. He was blaming Ford for the marginal things
that happened to his engine and transmission.

I learned one thing from my dad in my youth and that was that warming up an
engine cost very little and paid off in low numbers of maintenance things.

When I bought a new Volvo 544 back in 1962, I happened to be the first customer at
a new dealership. I got to know the owner fairly well, and he made a lot of
suggestions about how to keep the car on the road. He strongly suggested that I
have Castrol put in the car at the first oil change and to use it thereafter. I
took him at his word, and although we didn't keep the car more than two years, we
had zero problems. I sold it back to him when we bought our next car since the
dealer gave me a real low-ball offer as a trade-in. The original dealer gave me
about $800 more, since he was very familiar with the history of the car.

I was working for Ford, and since it looked like I would be there for a while, we
bought a Ford product next. The job only lasted for 43 years.

73,

Ralph - W8ROI
