I'd heard that WD-40 stands for "Water Displacement formula #40"; it 
certainly is not a general lubricant, as many a person has found :-)

That said, I have used it on external hinges such as gates.

There used to be a lubricant (here in Oz anyway) called CRC-232, but I 
cannot seem to find it any more (probably because it contained CFCs); 
there are replacements, though.
